WEC's Gala
Julie Colehour, WEC Board Chair

A note from WEC Board Chair Julie Colehour

Thank you for all of the amazing support we received over the last four days during WEC’s Virtual Gala! It was different, but still a lot of fun. And we exceeded our fundraising goals – raising over $275,000 for WEC’s advocacy efforts. THANK YOU!

My virtual table gathered together on Saturday evening and I was so pleased that people had a chance to meet our new amazing CEO Alyssa Macy. We watched videos, bid on some auction items, raised a toast, had chance to talk about both the environmental challenges and opportunities our state faces.

Of course COVID-19 also was a big part of the conversation, and I want to thank those of you who supported WEC and our partner Front & Centered’s rapid respond fund. We know that when we come out of this, there will be a lot of work to do to make sure we have a healthier and more resilient state that is built to protect and provide opportunity for all Washingtonians, no matter who they are or where they live.

Finally, I want to give a deep bow of appreciation for Joan Crooks’ leadership for the last 27 years. Gathering together would have given us the opportunity to honor her legacy in the way she deserves. She led the environmental community to be more strategic, effective, and equitable in how it approaches environmental advocacy. And the results of this all around us – from cleaner air and water and healthier working forests, to the steady defeat of expanded fossil fuel infrastructure and much more.

However as Joan has said many times, the best gift she could receive is not a party, but making sure WEC is sound financial footing. You all did that over the last four days. Thank you!

Raise Your Paddle

The Gala is WEC’s biggest fundraising event of the year, with the proceeds directly supporting our year-round policy, advocacy, and civic engagement work so we can fight for clean air, clean water, sustainable forests, and healthy communities for all Washingtonians. Together, we defeated 10 massive oil and coal terminals, passed the most equitable 100% clean electricity law in the nation, and protected millions of acres of habitat and forestland across the state!

Our goal is to raise $200,000 from this virtual event, and to help motivate us, a group of current and former board members and other donors have come together to create a $50,000 challenge fund. Make a tax-deductible gift to support Washington Environmental Council today.

About WEC

A message from Joan Crooks, former CEO

After more than 27 years at the helm of WEC and more than five as the CEO of both WEC and WCV, Joan Crooks decided that it is time for change and stepped down from her role as CEO earlier this year. Her work has built a strong foundation for our organization to continue to collaborate, innovate,
and evolve.

Hear from Joan as she talks about what makes WEC unique, our identity as a convener, and the future of the environmental movement.

A message from Alyssa Macy, CEO

Alyssa Macy joined WEC in January as the new CEO, and is a citizen of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Oregon, raised on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. The work of WEC requires a leader who can bring communities together around complex environmental issues and use our combined strengths to prevail in a challenging political climate.

Hear about Alyssa’s story, where she comes from, and her vision for leadership.
