Historically White-Led Environmental Organizations is a learning community comprised of individuals who support diversity, equity, and inclusion in our historically white-led places of work. People of color and white people working in historically white-led organizations attend. Most of us work for environmental organizations, but all who want to learn and contribute ideas are welcome.

HWLs participants seek ways to broaden our understanding, share our knowledge, and create institutional change within our organizations. We work to become better allies in the racial equity and justice space, dismantle structural racism, and build stronger and more effective movements for social change.

HWLs meetups generally occur monthly, and focus on topics of interest from the group. We discuss what our organizations are doing to be better allies, where we are struggling, what we can do to move forward, and where we can offer support and ideas to other organizations. We strive to hold meetups at alternating times during the workday and in the evening. Please try to bring new people to each meeting, especially those whose job functions relate to the topic.

Nobody is an expert – but we know that everyone has something to contribute and something to learn!

How did this start?

In the spring of 2016, the City of Seattle hosted a number of historically white-led, mainstream environmental organizations to participate in its Equity and Environment Initiative process. The experience was transformative for many staff that participated, and the idea for a permanent learning community of Historically White-Led Environmental Organizations was born. We are happy to continue convening meetups as long as the group desires, and welcome all participants to consider ways they can step into a leadership role or organize future meetups.
