Sustaining Environmental Protections
Why Washington must find a way to maintain basic protections which provide us with clean air, clean water, and a healthy place to live.
One of the 2010 Environmental Priorities WEC is working on most closely is Sustaining Core Environmental Protections in the State Budget.
The state plays a critical role in protecting the environment to ensure the long-term health of Washington's families, communities, and economy. So what does that mean for us right now?
Our state is in a budget crisis - our shortfall stands at $2.8 billion. Natural resource agencies that deliver key environmental protections have been hit hard - both last year and this year - and the results will threaten the health of our state.
We've put together a handout to explain the impacts of budget cuts in the following categories:
- toxic contamination clean up,
- air quality,
- water quality,
- water resources,
- habitat protection,
- transportation choices.
