Lobbying tips
a short list of tips on what to do when meeting with a decision maker
How to have an effective meeting with a law-maker.
- Introduce each person in your group – emphasize your connection to the decision-maker's community.
- Start on a positive note by thanking the legislator for something – thank them for sponsoring a bill or for taking time to meeting with you.
- Present the problem clearly and concisely. Do not assume they know about your issue.
- Be specific. If there is a specific piece of legislation, mention it by name or number.
- Be honest and straightforward. Do not be afraid to admit that you do not know an answer. Say that you will look into that answer and get back to them soon. (And do look into and get back to them soon.)
- Ask for them to take specific action in response to the problem (like helping the proposal move to a vote, speaking to other members of their party, etc.).
- Ask specific questions that require specific answers. Try to get a solid commitment.
- End on a positive note.
